Fighting Ghosts

last night the CBC aired the second part of its special feature 'Fighting Ghosts,' which showed the war in Afghanistan from the helmet-cam perspective of soldier Glen Villa. Villa, who is only 22 years old, was extensively interviewed and provided a sobering and insightful perspective on Canada's involvement in the region. thoughtful, emotional, and connecting, the CBC did an amazing job on this one. if you missed it I highly recommend clicking the above link and watching the videos.

Villa's story, however impactful, is not the first of its kind to emerge from the front lines. over the last few years the rise in unauthorized, soldier-made battlefield footage has been extraordinary. showing how raw combat really is, these films if nothing else provide an unwashed perspective on war, allowing the viewer to construct their own opinions without media interference. below is a video shot by Scott Kesterton, featuring Canadian troops in combat with Taliban insurgents in the Panjawi district of Kandahar Province of Afghanistan.

amazing footage. i also appreciate the canadian military reaction to the solider that was one of just don't talk to the press any more. its good to see that a military wont just show you more than just the embedded journalist. and cheers to the CBC for airing the footage and i loved the rap up with Brian Stewart and Peter Manibridge at the end..
